A Message from the President
I am very excited for the Hub City Cinema Society's second annual two day film festival HUB CITY CINEFEST! This is a special film festival that showcases 100% local talent from Vancouver Island. Because our mandate is to showcase local films, the festival depends on the creations of local filmmakers meaning the festival selection is flexible to the kind of films we have available to show this year. For example, last year we had 3 feature length local films to screen. This year don't have any new local features, but what we do have is a great selection of short films of varying lengths from 1 minute to 30 minutes in all sorts of genres divided into two shows: one for a mature audience and the other one more family friendly.
CINEFEST doesn't have a typical submission process. We are using more of a scouting process where we pick films that have caught our attention and shown excellence through accomplishment. A majority of the CINEFEST films have achieved some form of success either being in other film festivals around the world, or being part of some filmmaking program. Six of our films this year we're made as part of the Storyhive grant program. We want to encourage, foster and challenge filmmakers to pursue excellence. We don't want filmmakers to have the mentality that "I'm just going to make a movie for CINEFEST". There is a world out there with many other film festival that filmmakers should challenge themselves to submit to and we want to emphasize and celebrate the local Vancouver Island films that have been accepted in other festivals or achieved other accomplishments while also providing the opportunity for apparent talent to be shown.
CINEFEST is a celebration of the talent and successes of local filmmakers, and the best way to celebrate is watching our films together on the big screen. I think it's many filmmakers' dream to watch their film in an actual movie theatre (I know it's mine), which is why we are very excited this year to have CINEFEST at the Avalon Theatre and have a premier movie watching experience. I look forward to seeing the films on the big screen at Avalon, and I look forward to the future films that will be inspired. Enjoy the show!
